ICD-10 Code Updates for FY 2017

Without changes to the diagnosis and procedure code sets for the past three years, a plethora of changes are on the horizon for FY 2017. The ICD-10-CM/PCS code set will contain 147,275 codes starting October 1, 2016.

CMS and the CDC have published the diagnosis and procedure code sets that will go into effect October 1, 2016. Both ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets have been updated with some codes deleted or revised and many more codes added.

ICD-10-CM changes include 1,974 new codes, 425 revised codes, and 311 deleted diagnosis codes for a total of 71,486 codes.

ICD-10-PCS changes include 3,827 new codes, 491 revised titles, and 12 deleted codes for a total of 75,789 procedures codes available in FY 2017. The Medical and Surgical Section of PCS remains the largest code set and has the most codes added for a total of 65,676.

Examples of New Diagnosis Codes:

  • Zika Virus; previously recorded with A92.8, now has a definitive code: A92.5

  • Postprocedural hemorrhage and hematoma conditions, previously identified and recorded with one diagnosis code, are now identified with two distinct and separate codes. For example: Postprocedural hemorrhage of a nervous system organ or structure following a nervous system procedure and Postprocedural hematoma of a nervous system organ or structure following a nervous system procedure are coded as G97.51 and G97.61 respectively.

  • The Endocrine coding section brings many changes – 311 in total. Laterality now identifies diabetes complications that affect bilateral areas of the body. For example: E08.3311 codes Diabetes mellitus due to underlying condition with moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy with macular edema, right eye; and, E083312 codes Diabetes mellitus due to underlying condition with moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy with macular edema, left eye.

Changes within Procedure Codes:

Root operations Control and Creation have been revised. Control now includes “Control of other acute bleeding” in addition to the previous description “Stopping, or attempting to stop, post procedural bleeding.” And, root operation Creation is expanded beyond the previous description of “Making a new genital structure that does not take over the function of a body part” to include, “Putting in or on biological or synthetic material to form a new body part that to the extent possible replicates the anatomic structure or function of an absent body part.” Root operation Creation adds new codes for heart valves bringing clarification to the operation.
